Protecting Children's Rights: The Otto Group in the Fight Against Child Labor

To mark the International Day Against Child Labor, the Otto Group is highlighting its commitment to and initiatives for fair working conditions in global supply chains.

According to estimates by the International Labour Organization (ILO), approximately 160 million children worldwide between the ages of five and 17 are forced to work under conditions that qualify as child labor. However, not all work performed by children constitutes child labor. The term refers to activities that rob children of their childhood, their potential, and their dignity, and that harm their physical or mental development. Work that is dangerous or life-threatening, night work, and work involving dangerous machinery or chemicals are prohibited.

A clear stance and consistent action

For decades, the Otto Group has been actively committed to ensuring fair and safe working conditions in its global supply chains and maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward child labor. The causes of child labor are diverse, which is why the Group takes a comprehensive approach to the issue.
The company works closely withorganizationssuch as Save the Children and its subsidiary, The Centre for Child Rights and Business.This partnership has been in place since 2020 and is being continuously expanded. By signing the “Joint Action Pledge,” the Otto Group commits to integrating children’s rights even more systematically into its business processes. To achieve this, the Otto Group follows a clear course of action.


Specific measures and programs for prevention and control

🟨 Policies and Awareness: The Otto Group is updating its internal policies and processes and training its employees worldwide on children’s rights and child labor.


🟨 Risk analysis and training: Through systematic risk analyses, the Group identifies regions and partners with an increased risk of child labor. Targeted training sessions are conducted in these areas to raise awareness and impart practical knowledge. These include programs such as Save the Children’s WeCare andinitiativesby amfori.


🟨Support for families: In collaboration with its business partners, the Otto Group promotes family-friendly working conditions at production sites. One example is the School instead of Child Labour Fund, which supports the Child Rights Action Hub in Bangladesh to reduce child labor risks and create support services for at-risk children.

🟨 The WeCare Program: Between 2020 and 2021, this program was successfully implemented in twelve factories in China and Turkey. It supported parents with needs assessments, family-friendly measures in the workplace, training on parenting and communication, as well as targeted emergency assistance such as financial support, psychological counseling, and school supplies. In total, approximately 840 employees and nearly 2,000 children benefited directly or indirectly from the program.


🟨 Inspections and complaint procedures: The Otto Group conducts regular social audits (i.e., inspections to verify compliance with social standards in the supply chain or within its own operations) in high-risk countries. These audits verify compliance with the minimum age requirement and verify the age of workers. If child labor is detected, the “zero tolerance” policy applies: The case is prioritized and monitored until resolved. The Group’s internal whistleblower system, Speak Up, also allows for the anonymous reporting of suspected cases in over 30 languages.


A Look into the Future

The Otto Group will continue its efforts and expand the WeCare program to six additional factories in Turkey and Bangladesh. By 2024, more than 3,400 children in 22 factories had already benefited from the WeCare program.
Dr. Tobias Wollermann, Group Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at the Otto Group, emphasizes: “The fight against child labor in global supply chains is a key focus of our sustainability strategy. By collaborating with experienced partners, the company can make a concrete contribution to improving the situation of families and children.”
The Otto Group is aware of its responsibility and works continuously to ensure that children have a safe childhood and access to education, as this is a central component of its sustainability strategy.
