What does online marketing actually do? I wanted to explore this question, which is why I asked Julia Fischer for an interview. She has been working in online marketing for a few years and also supervises our interns and working students in this area.
My name is Julia, I'm 24 years old and I come from the district of Lichtenfels. I've known BAUR since I was a child, when BAUR Kaufwelt still existed. After graduating from high school, I started as a dual student in the BAUR Group at BAUR Fulfillment Solutions (BFS). I did my dual studies in media and communication management with a focus on dialog and online marketing at the DHBW in Ravensburg.
I was then taken on by the BAUR Group in 2018. Since last year in March, I've been working in online marketing in the Display, Retargeting, Affiliate and App Marketing team. Here I am responsible for app marketing. At the same time, I also design the advertising materials for our partners and have recently started supervising interns, trainees and working students in the area of online marketing.
The dual study program as such is already a highlight enough. The combination of studying in Ravensburg for a quarter of a year and working in the BAUR Group for a quarter of a year in my home country was just great. The DHBW is also nice in general, as you study in small groups and have a close and friendly relationship.
Student life at Lake Constance is also great. The surroundings are beautiful, as you are right on the border with Austria and Switzerland. There are lots of things to do at the weekends. You basically study where others go on vacation. Nevertheless, it was always nice to work at the BAUR Group and to get a taste of the various departments.
Many people think that marketing is purely associated with creative tasks. But the tasks in online marketing also consist of analysis and data-driven work. In general, the range of tasks at our company is really very broad. On the one hand, there are many analytical tasks, but also organizational and creative tasks, as we communicate a lot with service providers, write advertising texts and design advertising material.
We have a very broad range of tasks in the Display, Retargeting, Afilliate and App Marketing team:
Besides us, there are two other teams. The SEA (Search Engine Advertising) team and the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) team. Here, everything revolves around the search engine.
If you google something, for example, paid ads often appear as the first search result. The SEA team takes care of this. They also take care of product listing advertising (PLA). For example, if you google a specific product - such as shoes from a specific brand - real articles often appear first, which then link to various online stores. The SEA team therefore does everything to do with search engine marketing.
The SEO team deals with all search results that can be found under the paid ads. In other words, everything to do with organic search and optimization on Google so that we are listed higher up in the search results for our customers. This also includes topics such as keyword research, which must then also be placed in the store. The loading times of a website are also important. If Google notices that a page loads quickly, it will be displayed higher up.
I like being able to let off steam creatively, for example when creating advertising material. I also like the fact that there are always new topics. No other industry is constantly evolving like e-commerce or online marketing. There are always new features, new service providers and new opportunities. You are simply constantly learning new things and always have new challenges.
And in general, I think it's great that you have a mixture of everything in online marketing. I also really like my team and there's a really good atmosphere. Everyone helps each other and you can talk about anything. That's very important to me in the general working environment, that you feel comfortable and enjoy working with people.
I've also recently started looking after the interns in our department and attending job interviews. I always enjoy that too!
In any case, someone should be open to new things, as a lot is always changing and there are always innovations. On the other hand, it is important that you are not afraid of Excel, figures or evaluations. You should also be creative, of course.
In terms of personality, we are always happy when someone is open and eager to learn. In online marketing, you will gain a lot of insight as you will be assigned to two teams as an intern.
