Ilyana is already familiar with the BAUR Group from her school days. During an assessment training course, she got to know the mentality of the BAUR Group. During the interview, she was impressed by the "you" culture and the positive approach.
Ilyana is 26 years old and originally comes from Frankfurt am Main. As a child, she moved to the small town of Coburg with her parents. Ilyana became interested in logistics and purchasing during her Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in Bamberg. That is why she is currently doing her Master's in Logistics in Hof. Ilyana is currently completing her mandatory internship at the BAUR Group and is working in the Toys and Luggage Purchasing department. She now tells you about her time at the BAUR Group and what it's like to do an internship during Corona 🙂
The internship fits in well with my degree course and I am interested in purchasing, as it is closely related to logistics. In addition, purchasing has always been exciting for me. Apart from the fact that I like shopping myself, I'm interested in the processes, the selection of products, the cooperation and dealing with suppliers, but also the process of how a product gets to the online store and then to the customer. And who doesn't know toys too well from their own childhood?
After starting my internship, I spent about 3 weeks in the office. I got to know my colleagues personally, as well as colleagues from other departments. In the first few weeks, I also got to know the other students in the BAUR Group during lunch breaks. But then came Corona. Our entire department moved to the Anywhere Office. I had never worked from home so much before. Suddenly my living room was a whole terminal of monitors. I see my colleagues virtually at least once a week. We tell each other how things are going. That can sometimes take 1-2 hours. In the meantime, I've gotten used to working from home.
Before I can start work in the morning, I first need a large cup of coffee. I start my laptop and set up everything for the day. The first thing I do is deal with customer inquiries. In times of coronavirus, the demand for toys has risen sharply. I sometimes had to deal with over 50 inquiries in the morning. At the same time, suppliers were also arranging new delivery dates. It was also sometimes difficult for suppliers to meet this demand, especially when it came to the demand for puzzles.
Writing product information is one of my main tasks. For example, I write the descriptions of baby bibs.
Criteria such as age, color, motif, material, etc. are also entered. I am now well informed about the latest trends in toys. But I have also written texts for the luggage sector. It was of course exciting to see my own texts in the online store after a few days.
Finding the right style for the texts for the online store was definitely a challenge. I had to observe certain guidelines and legal conditions, but at the same time the texts also had to be implemented creatively. I hadn't yet had any contact with texts in my master's degree in logistics. However, it was also a challenge for me to understand the entire process until the product arrived in the online store. I think I mastered all the challenges well and was able to learn new things.
My expectations were definitely met, albeit in a different way. I hadn't expected to work from home 5 days a week. Of course, I missed the contact with suppliers and personal supplier meetings. They couldn't take place due to Corona. Apart from that, I really imagined it would be like this and I am thrilled with the way my colleagues interact with each other. My questions were always answered directly and great care was taken to ensure that I understood everything. My colleagues always told me to call Teams immediately if anything was unclear. That works very well.
I pay much more attention to baby products and toys. I can now recommend the latest baby products to my two sisters who already have children. I also have great small talk topics for parents-to-be. I can inspire my little nephew with the fact that I know who Fireman Sam is. My view has already changed.
