Every year on March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day—a day that is recognized worldwide and reminds us to honor the achievements of women. At the same time, it draws attention to the challenges that still lie ahead. It gives us the opportunity to pause, reflect, and think together about how we can create a more just world. 🤝
History is littered with women who have changed the world through their courage, innovation, and determination. From Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, to Malala Yousafzai, the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, these women have broken down barriers and raised their voices, often at great personal risk. Today, women around the world continue to fight for justice, freedom, and equality: Nadia Murad works tirelessly for the rights of survivors of sexual violence and draws attention to global human rights violations. So does Kathryn Finney. The entrepreneur and investor is committed to financially empowering female founders and creating more equal opportunities in business. Their stories inspire us and remind us that the fight for equality is not in vain and that each of us has the power to bring about change.
International Women's Day has its origins in the early 1900s, when women in many parts of the world began to fight for their rights. Since the first national Women's Day in the US in 1909, this day has developed into a global movement. Originally intended as a day of struggle for women's suffrage, better working conditions, and equal rights, International Women's Day has brought about numerous achievements over the years. Today, it reminds us that gender equality is an ongoing process that requires continuous commitment.
Despite remarkable progress, there are still significant challenges that women around the world must overcome. The gender pay gap, unequal educational opportunities, and gender-based violence are just some of the pressing issues that need to be addressed. International Women's Day provides a platform to raise awareness of these issues, spark conversation, and initiate change.
In addition to political debates and social engagement, networking, exchange, and mutual inspiration play an important role. On April 14, 2026, in Munich, the M.STORIES Female Business Festival will showcase how networking and mentoring can empower women professionally. The festival brings together female entrepreneurs, experts, and investors, offering lectures, workshops, and a pitch stage—the ideal opportunity to make new contacts, gather inspiration, and expand career opportunities.
Commitment is also evident here in the region: the Hof Women's Days already offer workshops, lectures, and cultural events around March 8, while in Nuremberg, various activities take place as part of Women's Month in March – from film screenings, discussions, readings, and workshops to meeting formats that focus on women's political issues and invite exchange. Such initiatives show how important visibility, exchange, and mutual support are—not only on International Women's Day, but throughout the year.
Gender equality is not just a women's issue—it affects us all. Each of us can help to challenge prejudices, break down barriers, and create fair conditions in the workplace, society, and everyday life. Only by acting together can we enable an inclusive future—regardless of gender or origin.
International Women's Day is not only a day of celebration, but also a day of reflection and action. While we recognize the progress that has already been made, we must continue to work toward a world where equal opportunities are a given. Education, awareness, and commitment are crucial to overcoming existing inequalities. Every voice, every initiative, and every step in the right direction helps to ensure that all people—regardless of gender, origin, or skin color—can reach their full potential.
