Discover the Friedrich Baur Foundation - a major sponsor in the fields of culture and science. For many years, the foundation has supported a wide range of projects in art, science and social affairs through a diverse program. It offers support to young talents and promotes innovative ideas. In this article, you can find out exactly how the foundation is making a lasting impact on the cultural and scientific scene.
The Friedrich Baur Foundation was established by company founder Friedrich Baur in 1953. As the sole heir to Friedrich Baur's entire estate, the foundation is also a shareholder of Baur Versand. With 51%, it holds the lion's share of Baur Versand, while the Otto Group holds 49% of the shares and is responsible for the operational management of the mail order business. In addition to its stake in the mail-order business, the foundation holds investments and several subsidiaries, which are subordinate to Friedrich-Baur-GmbH. In addition to securing the future of the company, the organization has set itself the goal of supporting medical research as well as art and culture.
The Friedrich Baur Institute was founded in 1956 and is part of the University Hospital of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. The focus of the institute is the treatment of patients with neuromuscular diseases with the help of research, collaboration with European and international cooperations, such as the benni & Co e.V. self-help group, as well as innovative therapy and care concepts.
The institute has anchored customer centricity in its own mission statement. Patients should be perceived as responsible partners with their own dignity, rights and interests and treated accordingly.
Cooperative interaction and the exchange of information with patients, payers, doctors, patient organizations and relatives is central to this. In its internal dealings, the Institute focuses on a harmonious working atmosphere and job security in order to promote identification with the Institute as an employer.
Special facilities within the institute include the myology laboratory for disease detection and the molecular myology laboratory for research into neuromuscular diseases, which can be caused by genetic defects, for example.
The Friedrich Baur Research Institute for Biomaterials was also operated by the foundation until 2017. Together with BioCer Entwicklungs-GmbH, the institute developed new material mixtures for implants, particularly in the bone region.
1/5 of the foundation's income goes to the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The Academy was founded in 1948 and is intended to serve as the "supreme care center of art". It is housed in the Königsbau of the Munich Residenz. The aims of the foundation are set out in the 1948 ordinance, which states that it is "to observe the development of the arts, to promote them in any way that appears expedient or to make suggestions for their promotion"
The aim of the institution is to provide artists with a livelihood and to facilitate appropriate events such as lecture evenings, readings and concerts. In addition, the Friedrich Baur Prize was awarded from 1990 to 2017, which was also financed by the foundation. The prize was awarded in five categories: Visual Arts, Literature, Music, Performing Arts and Film & Media Arts. Since 2016, the prize money has been combined into one prize, which has been awarded as the "Friedrich Baur Gold Prize" as part of the Hof International Film Festival since 2023.
In addition to his commitment as a local politician and entrepreneur, Friedrich Baur wanted to give something back to the community. The foundation achieves this by building housing and other properties.
What initially began with the construction of an employee housing estate with 54 apartments is still shaping the region today with the help of a retirement home, a kindergarten, the company's own sports facility and the renovation of the historic "Five Wounds Chapel" and the Catholic parish church in Burgkunstadt. Just recently, the foundation announced the construction of the Friedrich-Baur-Atrium with 33 barrier-free apartments.
