Easter: a celebration of resurrection and hope
Easter: a celebration of resurrection and hope

Easter is one of the most important festivals in Christianity and encompasses both religious and cultural dimensions, which are reflected in numerous traditions and customs. But what is behind this festival and how do we celebrate it today, both in our country and in other parts of the world? Let's take a look. 🐰

Easter traditions and customs 🎊

Easter customs are widespread in Germany and include many traditions that have been passed down through generations. One of the best known is the Easter egg hunt, in which children search for hidden, colorfully painted eggs. These eggs symbolize fertility and new beginnings. Another custom is the Easter bonfire to drive away winter and welcome spring. The Easter bunny, who brings the eggs, is also a popular figure. 🐇

Other countries also celebrate with unique customs that show in an exciting and creative way how diverse the festival is worldwide.

Exciting Easter traditions around the world 🌍

  • France: The Easter custom is characterized by the tradition of flying bells, the "cloches volantes". It is believed that the church bells fly to Rome from Good Friday to Easter Sunday and drop Easter eggs on their return, which the children can then search for.
  • Spain: In Spain, Easter, known as "Semana Santa", is a time of intense religious celebration that stretches over a week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. The solemn processions are particularly impressive, with participants carrying elaborately decorated figures of saints through the streets.
  • Sweden: Here, Easter is celebrated with the custom of "Påskkärringar", where children dress up as witches and go from door to door to collect sweets, similar to Halloween. Branches are also decorated with colorful feathers and special dishes are served.
  • Czech Republic: Easter Monday is known for the custom of "Pomlázka", in which men gently slap women on the back with elaborately woven willow rods to wish them good health and fertility.
  • Australia: Instead of the Easter bunny, the "Easter Bilby" is celebrated, a small, rabbit-like marsupial with a long nose and large ears, which serves as a symbol for the protection of endangered species.

Why do we actually celebrate Easter? 🌷

We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his death on Good Friday. This resurrection symbolizes eternal life and the triumph of good over evil. Easter is therefore one of the most important festivals in the church year and marks the culmination of Lent.

Happy Easter

With this in mind, we wish everyone a happy Easter and a time of reflection and new beginnings!
