Halloween: Amazing facts about the spooky holiday

Halloween and the ghosts that go with it are just around the corner. We would like to get you in the mood for tonight with some facts about this popular festival.

Did you already know these eight facts about Halloween?

The birthplace of Halloween is said to be Ireland.

The festival is said to have taken place in Ireland as early as 4,000 BC. On October 31, the Celts celebrated Samhain, which is dedicated to their harvest and the start of the new calendar year. They believed that spirits wandered around on this evening and that there could be contact with the realm of the dead. To drive away the evil spirits, people dressed up and haunted the streets themselves.

The pumpkin used to be a turnip.

In Ireland, it was traditional to walk around with a hollowed-out turnip as a lantern. When Halloween came to the USA, they swapped the turnip for a pumpkin. The reason for this was simple: there were more pumpkins in the USA and they were easier to work with than the vegetables.

"Trick or treat" is already an old tradition.

This tradition can be traced back to the Celts. They placed food outside their front doors to prevent the deceased from haunting the residents. This gave rise to the tradition of running from house to house asking for sweets.

There is the fear of Halloween.

Some people are afraid of the holiday. This fear is also known as Samhainophobia . The term goes back to the original festival of Samhain .

Halloween is not celebrated in Mexico.

In Mexico, people celebrate Dìa de los Muertos instead, which translates as Day of the Dead . The festivities take place from October 31 to November 2. People dress up in colorful costumes, eat skull-shaped sweets and await the arrival of the souls of their deceased. They cheer and celebrate their return. Halloween, which is celebrated in this country, is based on the fear of ghosts.

Bavaria has introduced a ban on dancing for Halloween.

Hard to believe, but true. In Bavaria, there has been a ban on dancing on the night of Halloween since 2008, as the next day is All Saints' Day. All Saints' Day is a Catholic holiday on which all deceased people who lived their lives in accordance with the Christian faith are commemorated . The ban is intended to ensure that the party night does not last too long and does not disturb the peace and quiet the next day.

An encounter with a spider means good luck.

If a spider crosses your path on Halloween, it means good luck according to a myth. The spider represents the spirit of a deceased loved one who is watching over you.
