In this interview, we spoke to Saskia, who is completing an internship in online marketing while also studying for a distance learning degree. She gives us exciting insights into her dual challenge and talks about her experiences in the digital world.
I'm Saskia, I'm 21 years old and I'm studying online marketing at the SRH distance learning university. I'm currently in my third semester and have been doing an internship at Baur in the SEO team in the online marketing department since mid-September. I will then be taken on as a working student there for a few more months.
In my free time, I like to read, go to the gym or ride my motorcycle. Apart from that, I also enjoy doing things with friends.
University or office?
At the moment I prefer the office, as I can gain more practical experience there. But due to the remote regulation, there's generally not much difference for me.
Early riser or late riser?
If possible, a late riser - I rarely start work before half past eight and prefer to study in the evening.
Bookworm or series junkie?
Both
Relaxed at home or party night?
Relaxed at home
For me, distance learning has the advantage that I can study flexibly and from any location without being tied down. As I had initially planned to travel a lot after graduating from high school, this was a natural choice. I can attend lectures online as required and otherwise work through the modules independently. I don't have any fixed examination phases and can schedule the material and examination dates flexibly. However, I don't have semester breaks.
I was originally looking for a working student position because I wanted to gain practical experience in the field of my studies and preferably in the long term. However, the internship position caught my eye and it was the perfect fit for the period.
As it's a distance learning course and I'm continuing my studies at the same time as the internship, it was of course a change to work full-time, but I actually have no problem with that at all.
I thought BAUR was cool from a customer perspective. I already knew the company from the local area and thought that e-commerce and my online marketing studies would be a perfect match.
I was particularly interested in the SEO team, as I think that search engine optimization is one of the most important areas of online marketing and is a very complex topic in itself.
I have various day-to-day tasks, such as logging the Google Search Console and looking for important changes or optimizing the video descriptions of Baur's YouTube videos for the search engines so that the content is displayed more often.
Then there's the internal search. Every day, I check which articles are displayed when you enter a search term and how this can be optimized. I really like doing this, as you can always see directly the next day what has changed. I also regularly create the sitemap for the articles in the Baur guide and take care of little things, such as test orders.
One highlight is that I create AI videos for Baur's YouTube channel. This means that the existing magazine article is spoken by an AI and visualized by an AI avatar. This is currently in a test phase and may be expanded further in the future.
So there's always something new being added and it never gets boring.
At the beginning I found it difficult to understand the terms of technical SEO, but after a few weeks I had familiarized myself well and could already understand some things better.
I recommend everyone to do an internship, especially if you don't know what you want to do after your studies - regardless of whether it's 6 months or less, as was the case for me. You get a lot of insight into practical topics and that really helps a lot.
I wouldn't have thought beforehand that this internship would lead me to apply for an apprenticeship. An internship can also open up new perspectives on different opportunities.
At BAUR, you get a comprehensive insight into the various topics of online retail and are supported accordingly. I also think the pleasant working environment and the flexible remote working arrangements are great.
